Always used encrypted passwords in the unrealircd.conf file. If you are not careful with your unrealircd.conf file any nosey user can see your plain text config file with plain text passwords. Prevent oper takeovers by encrypting your passwords in the unrealircd.conf file. Also, this can be used to add new O:Lines without asking them for their password. They need only to give you the encrypted password and they never have to reveal their real password.

To use this tool, replace "unencrypted_password" with your password to be encrypted. Then, paste the link into any Internet Browser. It will display the encrypted password. Copy the password into the unrealircd.conf file.
